Features and care
Campsis radicans, known as the trumpet vine or trumpet creeper, is a fast-growing, deciduous woody climber. It is grown to cover sturdy structures, fences and large vertical surfaces, where its tubular flowers provide a striking seasonal display and require ongoing management of its volume.
It climbs by means of aerial roots and develops dense stems with compound leaves made up of green, serrated leaflets. During summer it produces terminal clusters of elongated, bell-shaped flowers in shades of orange to red. After flowering, narrow, pod-like capsules appear, containing winged seeds.
It can be grown in full sun or part shade, flowering best in sunny spots. It adapts to dry-to-moist soils as long as they are well drained, and appreciates deep, spaced-out watering without staying permanently saturated. It reaches 8 to 12 m with support and falls within USDA zones 4–9, with good cold hardiness. Its vigour requires space and planned maintenance.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
