Features and care
Liquidambar styraciflua, known as sweetgum, is a deciduous tree prized for its autumn colour. Its initially pyramidal crown gives structure to parks and large gardens, while the changing foliage makes it a seasonal focal point or a shade tree.
The leaves are palmate, glossy and star-shaped with several lobes. Before falling they can combine yellow, orange, red and purple. The yellowish-green spring flowers are inconspicuous and give rise to spiky, woody, globe-shaped fruit clusters that remain visible after the growing season.
With moderate growth it reaches 15 to 25 m. It accepts sun or part shade and needs acidic, cool to moist, well-drained soil. Watering should be high to keep moisture even, increasing in heat without waterlogging. It has very high tolerance to humid conditions and withstands frost in USDA 5–9. Autumn colour also depends on the weather of each season.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
