Features and care
Ficus pumila, known as the creeping fig, is a fast-growing evergreen climber with strong covering ability. It is mainly used to clad walls, rockeries, trellises and other vertical surfaces, as well as functioning as ground cover or a container plant in sheltered locations.
Its juvenile stems cling by means of aerial roots and bear small, oval or heart-shaped leaves. In its adult phase it develops larger, thicker, glossy leaves on fruiting branches. The flowers are hidden inside the fleshy structures typical of the genus and have no ornamental value; pear-shaped fruits appear mainly on mature specimens grown outdoors.
It prefers part shade or filtered light and cool-to-moist soil that is always well drained. It needs enough watering to keep moisture even during growth, increasing amounts in heat without waterlogging. With support it can reach 10 to 15 m. It falls within USDA zones 8–11 and must be protected from hard frost, especially during establishment and in exposed locations.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
