Jasminum officinalis

Features and care

Jasminum officinalis, now recognised as Jasminum officinale and known as the common jasmine, is a fast-growing woody climber with deciduous or semi-evergreen foliage depending on the climate. Its scent and light habit make it suitable for pergolas, trellises, fences and sensory gardens.

Its twining stems wind around supports and bear opposite, compound leaves made up of fine, green leaflets. It produces numerous clusters of white, star-shaped, highly fragrant flowers, which can open from late spring and remain through summer. The small berry-like fruits are uncommon in ornamental cultivation.

It grows in full sun or part shade and appreciates cool, fertile, well-drained soil. During warm weather it needs regular watering, letting the soil aerate between waterings and avoiding waterlogging. With adequate support it reaches 4 to 8 m. It adapts to USDA zones 7–10 and withstands moderate cold, although tender shoots and flowers can suffer from late frosts.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
