Features and care
Lavandula stoechas, known as Spanish lavender, is a compact, aromatic, evergreen Mediterranean sub-shrub. It is valued for the colour of its flower spikes and its grey foliage, and is used in rockeries, borders, gravel gardens, pots, banks and low-water-use plantings.
It forms a rounded mound of woody stems and narrow, linear, greyish-green, fragrant leaves. The inflorescences are made up of small purple flowers grouped in spikes, topped by showy bracts resembling small wings. It flowers during spring and summer, with colour and habit varying by cultivar.
It needs full sun, airflow and dry, acidic, very well-drained soil. Watering should be very low and spaced out, cut back almost entirely in winter to avoid persistent moisture. It reaches 0.4 to 1 m and shows medium growth. It is suited to USDA zones 7–10, although hardiness can vary between selections. In cultivation, open sites should be prioritised and drainage checked before adjusting watering.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
