Acacia retinoides

Features and care

Acacia retinoides, now identified as Acacia retinodes and known as the four-seasons mimosa, is a small to medium-sized, fast-growing evergreen tree. It is cultivated for its light foliage and yellow flowers, and has been used as a specimen tree, screen, light shade tree, and component of Mediterranean gardens.

It has a rounded or spreading crown and branches covered with narrow, green to greyish-green phyllodes. Its fragrant flowers are grouped in globular yellow heads arranged in short clusters. It can flower at different times of the year, with a common occurrence during the summer, and subsequently forms elongated pods containing seeds.

It thrives in full sun or partial shade and prefers dry to cool, well-drained soil. Supplemental watering is required during establishment and dry periods, allowing the soil to partially dry out between waterings. It reaches a height of 5 to 10 meters and corresponds to USDA hardiness zones 9–11. Once established, it tolerates some drought but is sensitive to hard frosts and needs a warm, sunny location with ample space to develop its canopy.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
