Hesperaloe parviflora

Features and care

Hesperaloe parviflora, commonly known as hesperloe, red yucca, or yuquita, is a highly ornamental perennial plant native to Texas and northeastern Mexico. It forms a dense, graceful basal rosette of long, narrow, flexible, arching leaves that are dark green or glaucous in color, and whose edges often display fine white fibers that provide a distinctive texture year-round.

Of moderate growth, it can reach around 1-1.5 m in height and width, gradually spreading via offsets. From spring through summer, it produces long, slender, arching flower spikes up to 1.5-2 m tall, laden with hanging bells in striking shades of coral red, deep pink, or salmon that frequently attract hummingbirds. It is ideal as a feature specimen in rock gardens, highway medians, dry gardens, contemporary landscaping, and low-water public or private plantings.

It requires full sun and light, sandy, stony, or clay soil, provided it has excellent drainage. It is exceptionally tolerant of intense heat, wind, moderate humidity, and drought once established; watering should be low and infrequent, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings, although it tolerates slightly more water than other xerophytes without losing vigor. Prolonged waterlogging at the base is crucial.
