Dasylirion wheeleri

Features and care

Dasylirion wheeleri, known as sotol or desert spoon, is a highly ornamental perennial native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It forms a dense, structured rosette of long, narrow, stiff, arching leaves, ranging in color from bluish-green to silvery-gray, creating a sculptural silhouette year-round. Its margins have small, sharp teeth, so it’s best to plant it away from paths, driveways, and walkways.

Slow to moderately growing, it can reach around 1.5 m in height and width, developing a short, woody trunk over time. In summer, mature specimens produce a striking vertical flower spike up to 3–4.5 m tall, composed of small flowers in shades of cream, whitish, or beige. It is ideal as a centerpiece in rock gardens, dry gardens, Mediterranean landscaping, desert-themed compositions, and low-water plantings.

It requires full sun and dry, sandy, stony, or mineral soil with excellent drainage. Once established, it tolerates heat, drought, and intense sunlight. Watering should be low and infrequent, applied only as a supplement during the first year, during prolonged droughts, or to encourage slightly faster growth. It is essential to avoid waterlogging and to keep the center of the rosette dry, as excess moisture can cause rot. At Ornacom, we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years after planting.
