Features and care
Platanus hispanica, now identified as Platanus × hispanica and known as the London plane, is a deciduous tree with a broad crown. It is used in parks, promenades and large-scale avenue plantings for the shade it provides and for the structure of its branches.
The bark peels off in plates, creating a mottled pattern of pale and greenish-grey tones. The leaves are large and palmate, with several lobes. In spring it produces small, rounded flower heads, followed by spherical brown fruiting heads that usually appear in pairs and stay hanging on the tree.
It grows fast and reaches 20 to 30 m. It accepts full sun or part shade in cool to moist, well-drained soil, and needs high watering to keep moisture even during hot weather. It has high tolerance to humid environments and is frost-hardy in USDA 5–9. An adequate volume of soil helps it form its mature crown.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
