Prunus pisardii

Features and care

Prunus pisardii, now identified as Prunus cerasifera ‘Pissardii’ and known as the purple-leaf plum, is a deciduous tree of moderate size. Its dark foliage and early flowering are used as a contrast in gardens, wide borders and small tree groups.

It develops an upright crown that becomes rounded with age, carried on numerous twigs. The leaves are a dark reddish purple. In early spring, pale pink flowers open and fade to almost white, coinciding with the start of leaf growth; small plum-like fruits may follow.

It reaches 5 to 8 m with moderate growth and shows its colour best in full sun. It requires cool, well-drained soil and moderate watering during the warm season, letting the soil aerate between waterings. It accepts a medium level of humidity. Within USDA 5–8 it withstands winter frosts, although its early flowering depends on the spring weather.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
