Features and care
Quercus suber, known as the cork oak, is a slow-growing Mediterranean evergreen tree. Its thick, corky bark is its most distinctive feature, together with a year-round crown that brings shade and texture to large gardens and natural-style plantings.
Its leaves are oval, leathery and dark green on top, with a greyish underside and a slightly toothed margin. The branches can form a rounded, open crown. Inconspicuous catkins appear in spring, followed by elongated acorns that ripen in distinctive scaly cups.
It accepts sun or part shade and reaches 10 to 20 m. It needs acidic, dry to cool, well-drained ground, with low watering focused on establishment and droughts. It is advisable to let the soil dry out partially between waterings. It tolerates medium humidity and falls within USDA 8–10, being sensitive to hard frosts. Its care should favour soil aeration and a relatively mild winter setting.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
