Features and care
Salix purpurea, known as the purple willow, is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with a rounded habit. It is used in informal hedges, borders and wet-garden compositions, where its fine foliage and dense branches bring a texture different from that of trees.
The narrow leaves are bluish green, paler underneath, and are spread along fine twigs. In spring, compact greyish catkins appear, adding an ornamental detail before the foliage reaches its full development. The shrubby structure remains visible after the leaves fall in autumn.
It can reach 2–5 m with fast growth, in both sun and part shade. It needs moist to waterlogged soil and very high watering that keeps continuous moisture around the roots. Its tolerance to humid environments is very high and it withstands USDA 4–8 frosts. Keeping water in the ground is essential during establishment and the warm months.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
