Features and care
Tilia platyphyllos, known as the large-leaved lime or large-leaved linden, is a large deciduous tree. Its crown provides shade and its fragrant flowers add seasonal interest, with uses in parks, large gardens and avenues where it has enough root space.
The leaves are large, oval to rounded, with a heart-shaped base, toothed margin and hairy underside. In early summer, hanging clusters of pale yellow or cream flowers open, accompanied by elongated bracts. The small fruits ripen at the end of the season and stay attached to those structures.
It grows at a moderate rate to 25–35 m. It accepts sun or part shade and needs deep, cool to moist, well-drained ground. Waterings should be high and regular to keep moisture even, without saturating. It is adapted to very high humidity and withstands frosts in USDA 3–7. Water availability and soil aeration support the development of its broad crown.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
