Features and care
Dodonaea viscosa, known as dodonea or hopbush, is a fast-growing, very hardy, upright evergreen shrub. It features dense branches and narrow, lanceolate, glossy leaves, ranging from medium green to coppery depending on the variety and exposure. It can reach 3 to 4 m in height, though it tolerates pruning well and is highly suitable as a hedge, plant screen, isolated specimen, or background plant in Mediterranean, coastal, and low-water gardens.
Its flowering is discreet, with small greenish flowers that give way to papery, three-winged fruits, which are green, golden, pink, or purplish depending on the specimen and degree of ripeness. These fruits offer significant ornamental interest and contrast with the foliage, especially in autumn. The variety Dodonaea viscosa ‘Purpurea’ also stands out for its purple or burgundy leaves, which are more intense in good light conditions.
It adapts to a wide variety of dry, sandy, poor, or stony soils, provided they have good drainage. Once established, it is very resistant to drought, heat, wind, and environmental salinity, making it particularly suitable for coastal and exposed areas. Regular watering is recommended during the first year, reducing it thereafter, while avoiding waterlogging and intense frosts. At Ornacom, we cultivate each specimen directly, ensuring a balanced habit and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
