Features and care
Brachychiton populneus, commonly known as the brachychiton, is an evergreen tree with a dense crown and glossy foliage. It has been used in parks, streets, and large gardens for its persistent structure, shade, and the presence of a trunk that can swell at the base.
The initially pyramidal crown opens up with age. Its leaves are alternate, oval or lanceolate, and sometimes lobed. The small, bell-shaped flowers, white or cream with reddish interior spots, appear around the beginning of summer and precede dark, woody fruits resembling small boats.
It tolerates full sun and partial shade, and grows at a moderate rate to about 8–15 m. It prefers dry to cool, well-drained soil. Irrigation should be minimal, focused on establishment and dry periods, allowing the soil to partially dry out between waterings. It tolerates moderate humidity and corresponds to USDA 9–11, being sensitive to hard frosts and performing better in mild winters.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
