Cornus sanguinea

Features and care

Cornus sanguinea, commonly known as blood dogwood, is a fast-growing, abundantly branching deciduous shrub. Its reddish young stems provide visual interest after leaf fall, making it a popular choice for group plantings, informal screens, and winter arrangements.

It forms a spreading clump with oval or elliptical, green, slightly hairy leaves. In late spring, it produces clusters of small white flowers that give way to dark fruits. The seasonal change in foliage and the coloration of the twigs allow it to be combined with species of different textures and structures.

It can reach 2 to 5 meters in height in both sun and partial shade. It requires cool to moist, well-drained soil with frequent watering to maintain consistent moisture during the warmer months. It exhibits very high tolerance to humid environments and good cold hardiness (USDA 4–8). Cooler locations promote more even growth than very dry ones.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
