Features and care
Liriodendron tulipifera, known as the tulip tree, is a large, fast-growing deciduous tree. It is used as a shade specimen in parks and large gardens, where both the geometry of its leaves and its flowers, which look like small tulips, stand out.
The crown can be pyramidal or oval and broadens over time. The lobed leaves have a characteristically cut-off tip and turn yellow in autumn. In late spring cup-shaped flowers appear, yellowish green with an orange band, followed by cone-like clusters of winged fruits.
It needs full sun and reaches 20 to 35 m. The soil should be deep, cool to moist and well drained, with high watering to keep moisture even through the summer. Its tolerance to humid conditions is very high and it withstands the frosts of USDA zones 4–9. Having enough soil volume favours its establishment and the long-term upkeep of its crown.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
