Magnolia grandiflora

Features and care

Magnolia grandiflora, known as southern magnolia, is an evergreen tree with a dense crown and glossy foliage. Its large, white, fragrant flowers make it a standout specimen for parks, large gardens and plantings that call for a steady green presence all year round.

The leaves are thick, oval and leathery, dark green above and often with a brown, felted underside. From late spring large solitary flowers appear, with new ones opening through the summer. Later, cone-shaped fruiting structures develop and reveal reddish seeds.

Its growth is slow to moderate and it can reach 15 to 25 m. It accepts full sun or part shade on acidic, cool to moist, drained soil. It needs a high watering regime that keeps moisture even without saturation. It copes very well with humid air and withstands frost within USDA 6–10, although exposure and the condition of young specimens should be taken into account.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
