Citrus latifolia/aurantifolia

Features and care

Citrus latifolia / Citrus aurantifolia, known as Persian lime and Mexican lime respectively, comprises two of the most widely cultivated limes for their aromatic fruit and culinary uses. They are small, compact, evergreen trees or shrubs with slender branches that may have thorns and oval, glossy, deep green leaves. Their dense, aromatic foliage also provides significant ornamental value.

Growing at a moderate to rapid rate, they can reach approximately 2 to 5 meters in height, although they tend to remain smaller when grown in pots. For much of the year, they produce small, highly fragrant white flowers, similar to those of other citrus fruits. After flowering, they develop oval or round fruits, initially green, which may turn yellowish as they ripen. The pulp is juicy, acidic, and aromatic, and is widely used in beverages, pastries, sauces, marinades, and various international dishes.

They require direct sunlight or a very bright location, with good exposure being especially important for flowering and fruit production. They prefer fertile soils, rich in organic matter and with excellent drainage, as their roots are sensitive to excess moisture. Watering should be regular and moderate, increasing during warm periods and reducing during the winter, always allowing the surface of the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. They are sensitive to frost, so in regions with cold winters, it is advisable to protect them from low temperatures or grow them in pots for shelter. Light pruning helps maintain a compact crown, remove damaged branches, and promote a balanced structure.
