Mespilus germanica

Features and care

The German medlar (Mespilus germanica) is a small, slow- to medium-growing, deciduous tree or shrub prized for its irregular shape, large flowers, and unique fruit. It can reach 3 to 6 meters in height, forming a broad, branching crown that lends a natural appearance to orchards, fruit gardens, and traditionally styled plantings. Its leaves are elongated, dark green, and slightly hairy on the underside, turning golden, reddish, and coppery before falling in autumn.

In late spring, it produces large, solitary, white flowers, sometimes with a soft pink tinge, which attract pollinating insects. Later, it develops rounded, flattened, reddish-brown fruits with persistent sepals at the ends, giving them their characteristic appearance. European medlars are harvested in autumn, but they need to undergo a natural softening process, known as overripening or bletting, so that their flesh becomes soft, sweet, and ready to eat.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
