Features and care
Imperata cylindrica, known as cogon grass, is a rhizomatous, erect, fast-growing perennial grass. Its visual interest lies in the verticality of its leaves and its silky inflorescences. It has a history of ornamental and soil-stabilisation use, though these uses are not a general planting recommendation.
It forms dense stands of rigid, narrow, green leaves with a pale midrib and finely rough margins. The inflorescences are cylindrical, white, silky panicles that can appear in summer. In temperate areas flowering is usually infrequent, while in tropical conditions it can occur more regularly.
It tolerates full sun or part shade and adapts to cool-to-moist soil, tolerating brief waterlogging. Its watering needs are very high: frequent, deep applications, adjusted so the roots do not stay oxygen-starved for long periods. It reaches 0.6 to 1.5 m and falls within USDA zones 5–10. It tolerates cold winters within that range, although how persistent its top growth is varies with local conditions.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
