Pennisetum advena

Features and care

Pennisetum advena, now identified as Cenchrus advena and known as the fountain grass, is an ornamental grass with an arching habit and fast growth. Its silhouette is used in beds, borders and large containers, where the leaves and flowering stems create movement and textural contrast.

It develops long, narrow leaves that arch from the base. Colour depends on the cultivar grown: commercial forms exist in reddish or purple tones. Above the foliage rise cylindrical, feathery inflorescences in pink to violet shades, which keep their appeal as they mature. Flowering is estimated from late summer through autumn, with variation between cultivars.

It needs full sun and dry-to-cool, well-drained soil. During establishment and drought periods it needs supplemental watering, letting the ground dry out partially between waterings. It reaches 0.8 to 1.5 m including flowering and falls within USDA zones 8–11. It tolerates heat and some drought once rooted, but needs protection from frost, with tolerance depending on the cultivar.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
