Pennisetum alopecuroides

Features and care

Pennisetum alopecuroides, now identified as Cenchrus alopecuroides and known as the fountain grass, is a clump-forming perennial grass with an arching habit and fast growth. It adds texture and movement to borders, mass plantings, naturalistic gardens, rockeries and seasonal-interest compositions.

It forms dense clumps of long, linear leaves, green during growth and turning straw or amber at season’s end. Its cylindrical, brush-like inflorescences rise above the foliage and can show silvery, pink, reddish or purple tones depending on the selection. The spikes develop in summer and keep their presence through autumn.

It prefers full sun, though it tolerates part shade, and needs cool-to-moist, well-drained soil. Watering should keep moisture even, increasing during heat without saturating the roots. It reaches 0.6 to 1.2 m including flowering and falls within USDA zones 5–9. It withstands winter frost within that range; its seasonal interest continues as the foliage turns from green to straw at the end of growth.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
