Features and care
Stipa tenuissima, now identified as Nassella tenuissima and known as Mexican feather grass, is a perennial grass with a fine clump and light movement. Its texture has led to uses in rockeries, borders, containers and dry-garden compositions. It is described for its ornamental interest, without being put forward as a general recommendation for new plantings.
It forms dense tussocks of very narrow, flexible leaves, green to silvery-grey, turning straw-coloured with cold. In summer, fine, silky, pale panicles appear, which can persist into autumn and produce abundant seed. The overall effect is airy and responds readily to wind.
It tolerates full sun or part shade and needs dry-to-cool, well-drained soil. During establishment and drought it needs supplemental watering, letting it dry out partially between applications. It reaches 0.4 to 0.8 m and falls within USDA zones 6–10. It tolerates dry spells once established and shows low tolerance to persistent ambient humidity. Winter temperatures can change the foliage colour without necessarily killing the clump.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
