Features and care
Bignonia capensis, now recognised as Tecoma capensis and commonly known as Cape honeysuckle, is a fast-growing, evergreen climber or shrub. It is valued for its warm, long-lasting flowering and is used to cover fences, pergolas, walls and trellises, or to form informal hedges in temperate-climate gardens.
It produces long, flexible stems with compound leaves made up of glossy, toothed, green leaflets. Its tubular flowers, gathered in terminal clusters, come in shades of orange, red or yellow. Flowering is concentrated from autumn to spring and can extend further in warm conditions.
It tolerates full sun or part shade, although it flowers more abundantly in bright positions. It needs dry-to-cool, well-drained soil, with supplemental watering during establishment and drought, letting it dry out partially between waterings. It reaches 3 to 7 m with support, tolerates medium ambient humidity and falls within USDA zones 9–11, so it should be sheltered from frost.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
