Pyrostegia venusta

Features and care

Pyrostegia venusta, known as the flame vine or golden shower, is a very fast-growing evergreen climber. Its orange flowering brings colour during the cold months and is used to cover pergolas, fences, trellises and other sturdy structures able to support its extensive growth.

It climbs by tendrils and forms a dense cover of green, opposite, compound leaves. Its tubular, orange-red flowers appear in large clusters that can partly hide the foliage. Main flowering occurs during autumn and winter, with possible lighter appearances out of season in warm climates.

It grows in full sun or part shade and prefers cool, well-drained soil. During warm weather it needs regular watering, letting the soil aerate between waterings and avoiding persistent excess moisture. With support it can reach 8 to 15 m and shows very fast growth. It falls within USDA zones 9b–11 and is sensitive to frost, so it should be reserved for warm, sheltered positions.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
