Features and care
Solanum jasminoides, now identified as Solanum laxum and known as the potato vine, is a semi-evergreen climber with thin stems and fast growth. Its light, delicate flowering allows it to cover trellises, fences, pergolas and sheltered walls, and it also adapts to large containers.
It has twining stems and simple, alternate, glossy leaves, oval or lance-shaped. Its white, star-shaped, lightly scented flowers show yellow stamens and gather in terminal clusters. It flowers during summer and autumn. Afterwards small rounded berries can be seen, turning bluish, purple or black as they ripen.
It grows in full sun or part shade in cool, fertile, well-drained soil. It needs regular watering during warm weather, letting the soil aerate between waterings and avoiding waterlogging. With support it reaches 4 to 8 m and shows fast growth. Its hardiness falls within USDA zones 8–11; it should be placed in sheltered positions, since the foliage and young stems can be damaged by frost.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
