Eriobotrya japonica

Features and care

Castanea sativa, known as the European chestnut or common chestnut, is a large deciduous tree, highly valued for its longevity, broad canopy, and edible fruit. It can reach between 20 and 30 meters in height, developing a robust trunk and sprawling structure that requires ample space. Its leaves are long, glossy, and distinctly toothed, a deep green color during the growing season, turning golden before falling in autumn.

At the beginning of summer, it produces long, yellowish catkins, with male flowers at the top and female flowers at the base. After pollination, spiny husks form, which, upon ripening in autumn, open to release the chestnuts. Although it is a monoecious species, fruit production improves when several specimens or compatible varieties are planted together in bloom, thus promoting cross-pollination.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
