Juglans regia

Features and care

The Juglans regia, known as the common walnut or European walnut, is a large, deciduous fruit tree, valued for its nuts, its broad canopy, and its ability to provide shade. It can reach between 15 and 25 meters in height and develops a robust trunk with a spreading crown, requiring ample space and should be planted away from buildings, utility lines, and other small trees. Its leaves are large, compound, and aromatic when rubbed, with five to seven green leaflets that turn yellow before falling in autumn.

In spring, it produces male flowers in hanging catkins and inconspicuous female flowers, both present on the same tree. During autumn, the green, rounded fruits ripen, protecting the walnuts inside. Although it can fruit singly, planting compatible varieties promotes pollination and improves the regularity of the harvest. It is important to note that the walnut tree releases juglone, a natural substance that can hinder the development of sensitive nearby species, such as tomatoes, peppers, azaleas, blueberries, and peonies.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
