Echium candicans

Features and care

Echium candicans, known as Madeira’s Pride, is a broad, fast-growing evergreen subshrub native to the island of Madeira. It forms a rounded clump of upright stems and lanceolate, greyish-green leaves covered in fine down, giving them a soft, luminous texture. It can reach between 1.5 and 2.5 meters in height and width, making it ideal for rock gardens, flowerbeds, Mediterranean gardens, coastal plantings, and areas requiring low water consumption.

From spring through summer, it produces large, dense, conical terminal spikes of numerous blue, lilac, or white flowers, depending on the variety. The showy blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, creating a striking vertical effect against the silvery foliage. After flowering, it’s advisable to remove the spent spikes and lightly prune the plant to maintain a more compact shape and encourage new growth.

Once established, it exhibits good drought resistance and requires moderate, infrequent watering, primarily during the first year or prolonged periods of heat. It is sensitive to severe frosts, so protection is recommended in climates with cold winters. At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
