Escallonia rubra

Features and care

The red scallonia (Escallonia rubra) is a vigorous, dense, evergreen shrub, ideal for hedges, screens, borders, and shrub borders. Its small, glossy, dark green leaves have gently serrated edges, creating a compact and decorative mass of foliage year-round. It can reach 2 to 4 meters in height with rapid growth, although it responds very well to pruning to maintain a more compact and tidy shape.

From summer until early autumn, it produces clusters of tubular flowers ranging in color from deep pink to crimson, which contrast with the dark foliage and attract pollinating insects. The flowers are distributed at the ends of the branches and are particularly showy in specimens grown in full sun. It is a very suitable species for coastal gardens thanks to its tolerance to wind and salinity, where it can be used as a hedge, flowering screen, or informal screen.

It tolerates humid, coastal environments well, although it’s advisable to watch for leaf spots and reduce watering if the soil remains waterlogged. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain density and encourages branch renewal. At Ornacom, we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years after planting.
