Hebe franciscana

Features and care

Hebe franciscana, now identified as Veronica × franciscana, is a compact, highly branched evergreen shrub prized for its persistent foliage and long flowering period. It forms a rounded clump between 1 and 2 meters tall, with glossy, slightly leathery green leaves that maintain ornamental interest year-round. Its neat form makes it suitable for borders, low hedges, containers, rock gardens, and coastal gardens in mild climates.

During spring and summer, it produces terminal spikes of small flowers in shades of lilac, violet, blue, pink, or white, depending on the variety. These inflorescences contrast with the dark foliage and attract pollinating insects. To encourage a denser shape and prolong the plant’s good appearance, it’s advisable to remove faded spikes and perform light pruning after flowering, avoiding cutting over old wood.

It prefers cool, moderately fertile, and well-drained soils, with regular watering during the warm season, allowing the soil to aerate between waterings and avoiding any waterlogging. It tolerates proximity to the sea and humidity, but must be protected from severe frosts, intense cold, and persistent humid heat. At Ornacom, we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years after planting.
