Phillyrea angustifolia

Features and care

Phillyrea angustifolia, commonly known as narrow-leaved mock privet or narrow-leaved mock privet, is a highly ornamental evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region. It has a dense, compact, and extensively branched structure, with woody stems and opposite, narrow, lanceolate leaves that are dark green and glossy on the upper surface and slightly lighter on the underside. Its foliage is somewhat reminiscent of the olive tree, although its leaves are narrower and smaller.

Slow to moderately growing and generally compact, it can reach between 1 and 3 meters in height, although it may develop a more tree-like appearance over time. In spring, it produces small, inconspicuous whitish flowers clustered in the leaf axils, which emit a delicate fragrance and attract various pollinating insects. Later, it develops small, dark-colored, fleshy fruits. Its evergreen foliage and tolerance for pruning make it a suitable species for hedges, borders, flowerbeds, Mediterranean gardens, and low-maintenance plantings.

It requires full sun or partial shade, thriving especially well in bright, warm locations. It adapts to a wide variety of soils, although it prefers fertile or moderately poor, dry soils with excellent drainage. Once established, it exhibits remarkable resistance to drought, heat, and coastal environments, and can withstand moderate frosts. Watering should be moderate, especially after establishment, allowing the soil to partially dry out between waterings. Prolonged waterlogging must be avoided, while light pruning can be used to maintain a compact shape and control its growth.
