Features and care
Pittosporum tenuifolium, commonly known as New Zealand pittosporum, is a highly ornamental evergreen shrub or small tree native to New Zealand. It boasts a dense, elegant, and extensively branched structure with slender, dark stems and small, oval, glossy, deep green leaves. Its delicate foliage and fine branches lend it a sophisticated and modern appearance, particularly appealing in contemporary gardens.
With moderate to rapid growth, it can reach between 3 and 5 meters in height, although pruning can keep it as a compact shrub or form hedges. In spring, it produces small, dark purple or reddish-brown flowers, generally inconspicuous but with a pleasant sweet fragrance, especially noticeable at night. Later, it may develop small, rounded fruits containing seeds. Its evergreen foliage and good tolerance to pruning make it widely used for hedges, screens, borders, flowerbeds, and container planting.
It requires full sun or partial shade, although in very hot climates it can benefit from some protection from intense sunlight. It prefers fertile, slightly moist, and well-drained soil, adapting to poorer soils once established. It tolerates moderate periods of drought reasonably well, although it needs regular watering during its growing season, especially during the warmer months. Watering should be moderate, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings and avoiding prolonged waterlogging. It tolerates pruning well, which can be done to control its size, maintain a compact shape, and encourage denser foliage.
