Features and care
Bauhinia purpurea, known as the purple orchid tree, is a warm-climate tree species grown for its pink flowers. It is found in parks, gardens and avenues, where its distinctive foliage and flowering are the main points of ornamental interest.
It has broad, almost circular leaves, divided into two lobes resembling a hoof print. The flowers, in pink to purple tones, gather at the branch tips and stand out especially during autumn. Afterwards it develops long, flattened pods that become woody as they ripen.
It needs a full-sun position and cool-to-moist, well-drained soil. Watering should be high to keep moisture even during the growth phase, increasing in heat without saturation. It reaches 6 to 10 m and grows quickly. It tolerates very humid environments but is sensitive to frost; its growing range is USDA 9b-11.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
