Bauhinia variegata

Features and care

Bauhinia variegata, known as the orchid tree or cow’s foot tree, is a tree with an irregular crown and showy flowers. Its documented ornamental uses include gardens, parks, and urban landscaping, where it is valued for its leaf shape and orchid-like flowers.

The arching branches bear large, rounded, bilobed leaves, which may fall before flowering depending on the climate. The flowers range from white to purple and appear in clusters toward the ends of the branches, usually between winter and spring. Flat pods develop behind them, turning brown.

With rapid growth, it reaches between 6 and 10 meters in height. It can be planted in full sun or partial shade, in cool, well-drained soil. Water moderately and regularly during the warm season, allowing the soil to aerate between waterings. It tolerates high humidity and requires mild winters; frost limits its cultivation, which falls under USDA zones 9–11.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
