Features and care
*Celtis occidentalis*, known as the American hackberry, is a fast-growing deciduous tree with a broad crown. It is used to provide shade in parks and urban spaces, and its spreading habit makes it suitable for locations where there is sufficient space for the branches to develop.
Its alternate leaves are oval to lanceolate, rough, and green, with serrated margins and yellow autumn color. The spring flowers are small and yellow-green. The fleshy fruits, ranging from reddish to purple, ripen late in the season and add interest to the densely branched crown.
It thrives in sunny or partially shaded locations and reaches a height of 12 to 20 meters. It adapts to soil ranging from dry to moist—provided it is well-drained—and requires moderate, deep, and infrequent watering. It tolerates high-humidity environments without requiring waterlogged soil. Within USDA zones 2–9, it demonstrates good frost resistance, even in regions with harsh winters.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
