Ceratonia siliqua

Features and care

*Ceratonia siliqua*, known as the carob tree, is a slow-growing, evergreen Mediterranean tree with a dense crown. It is prized for its steady shade, leathery foliage, and distinctive pods, and is used in dry gardens, coastal areas, and traditional-style plantings.

It develops a sturdy trunk and thick branches covered with leaves made up of firm, dark green, oval leaflets. Its small flowers—lacking showy petals—cluster together in the autumn. The fruit consists of pods that turn from green to dark brown, creating a distinctive feature within the tree’s crown.

It requires full sun and dry soil with excellent drainage. Its water requirements are very low, with widely spaced watering—or none at all—during winter. It reaches a height of 6 to 10 meters and prefers dry environments, showing very low tolerance for persistent moisture. Its USDA hardiness rating of 9–11 reflects its need for mild winters and high sensitivity to frost.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
