Features and care
*Colutea arborescens*, known as bladder-senna, is a fast-growing, open-habit deciduous shrub. It is valued for its combination of yellow flowers and inflated seed pods, and can be incorporated into shrub borders, informal hedges, and naturalistic dry gardens.
Its compound leaves are divided into green leaflets that provide a light texture. The papilionaceous flowers are clustered in small racemes and appear in summer, sometimes as early as late spring. After flowering, hollow, swollen pods form—translucent at first—which change color as they mature.
It requires a sunny location and dry soil with adequate drainage to prevent water retention. Watering should be minimal and infrequent, reduced almost entirely during the winter. It reaches a height of 2 to 4 meters and has low tolerance for prolonged high humidity. It is hardy in USDA zones 5–9, particularly in locations where the soil remains well-aerated.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
