Features and care
Eucalyptus ficifolia, currently identified as Corymbia ficifolia and known as the red flowering gum, is an evergreen tree with outstanding flowering. The masses of flowers at the tips of the branches make it a colour accent in gardens and open spaces with mild winters.
The adult leaves are oval to broadly lanceolate, dark green above and paler below. In summer and autumn clusters of scarlet or orange flowers appear, depending on the specimen. The fruits that follow are urn-shaped woody capsules that add a distinctive texture.
It grows at a moderate rate and reaches 8 to 15 m in full sun. It prefers cool, acidic, very well-drained ground, with moderate watering during growth and pauses that let the soil take in oxygen. It has an intermediate adaptation to humid conditions. Its USDA 9–11 hardiness calls for sites with mild winters and protection from episodes of hard frost.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
