Features and care
Fagus sylvatica, known as European beech, is a deciduous tree with a dense crown and a strong structural presence. It is used in parks, cool-climate gardens and large shade plantings; it can also be clipped into hedges that make the most of its branching and leaf density.
The leaves are oval and glossy with a slightly wavy margin, fringed with fine hairs when young. In autumn they turn golden and copper. The spring flowers are barely visible and give rise to triangular beechnuts, protected by a husk that opens when ripe.
Left to grow freely it reaches 25 to 35 m, with slow to moderate growth. It prefers sun or part shade and cool to moist, well-drained ground, with high watering that keeps moisture even. Its tolerance to humid conditions is very high and it withstands frosts in USDA 4–7. Water balance in the soil is especially important in warm summers to keep the foliage in good condition.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
