Features and care
Fraxinus ornus, known as the manna ash or flowering ash, is a mid-sized deciduous tree with a rounded crown. Unlike other ashes, its white flowers have real ornamental value, so it can offer spring interest as well as shade in gardens and open spaces.
The bark is smooth and grey, and the leaves are made up of several opposite leaflets. In spring dense panicles of white, fragrant flowers appear, at the same time as the foliage or shortly after. The elongated fruits gather in clusters and can stay on the branches for part of the winter.
It reaches 8 to 15 m with moderate growth. It prefers full sun, dry to cool ground and adequate drainage, with low water demand. Watering is focused on establishment and droughts, letting the soil dry out partially. It tolerates medium humidity and withstands frost in USDA 6–9. It allows a more restrained watering regime than ashes from constantly moist environments.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
