Morus nigra

Features and care

Morus nigra, known as the black mulberry, is a deciduous tree with a broad crown and moderate growth. It is valued for its shade, its strongly textured leaves and its dark fruit, and suits traditional-style gardens and open spaces where its branches can spread out.

The leaves are large, dark green and heart-shaped, turning yellow before they fall. The flowers are small and greenish, with no particular visual impact. The clustered fruits turn a very dark reddish purple as they ripen during the warm season, offering a sharp contrast with the foliage.

It reaches 8 to 12 m and prefers a full-sun position. It needs dry to cool, well-drained soil, with low watering once established and supplemental water during establishment or drought. It is best to let the soil dry out partially between waterings. It tolerates medium humidity and USDA 5–9 frosts, keeping a better vegetative balance when water is not held continuously around the roots.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
