Features and care
Paulownia tomentosa, known as the princess tree or foxglove tree, is a very fast-growing deciduous tree. Its large leaves and flower clusters explain its ornamental use as a shade tree or flowering specimen; it is described here without recommending it indiscriminately for new plantings.
The crown is rounded and spreading, with large, oval leaves that are densely hairy underneath. In spring, before the leaves emerge, clusters of lilac tubular flowers open, spotted and streaked inside. They are followed by oval woody capsules that change from green to brown as they ripen.
In sunny conditions it reaches 12 to 20 m. It requires dry to cool, well-drained soil, with low supplemental watering during establishment and dry spells. The soil should be allowed to dry out partially between waterings. Its tolerance to humid air is medium and it withstands the winter frosts of the USDA 5–9 range; flowering depends on the condition of the buds and on each year’s weather.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
