Features and care
Phytolacca dioica, known as the ombú, is a tree-sized species with a swollen base, valued for its sculptural silhouette. Its broad crown and the volume of its trunk explain its use as a shade specimen in large-scale parks and warm landscapes.
The trunk and the surface roots can take on irregular, very striking shapes. The leaves are simple, oval and smooth-edged, and stay on the tree for a variable time depending on the climate. It produces hanging clusters of cream or greenish-white flowers and, on female specimens, fleshy fruits that darken as they ripen.
It grows quickly to 10–20 m, in both sun and part shade. It prefers cool, well-drained ground, with moderate, regular watering during the warm season, letting the soil breathe. It tolerates high humidity and falls within USDA 9–11. It is sensitive to frost and needs mild winters to keep its foliage more consistently.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
