Platanus orientalis

Features and care

Platanus orientalis, known as the oriental plane, is a large deciduous tree with a rounded crown. Its horizontal branching and its shade make it suitable for tree compositions in large parks and open spaces, where its full structure can be appreciated.

Its large green leaves have fairly deep palmate lobes. Spring flowering is inconspicuous and is organised in small heads. These give way to clusters of spherical fruits, usually grouped several together, which turn brown and can stay on the tree until early winter.

It needs a full-sun position and reaches 20 to 30 m with fast growth. The soil should be kept cool to moist; it tolerates brief flooding, but the frequent, deep waterings of its very high watering regime must avoid prolonged hypoxia. It copes well with high humidity and withstands USDA 6–9 frosts. A continuous water supply is especially important during establishment.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
