Features and care
Populus alba, known as the white poplar, is a very fast-growing deciduous tree with a broad crown. The contrast between the two sides of its leaves explains its landscape use in screens, groups and open spaces, where the wind reveals the silvery effect of the foliage.
The alternate leaves range from oval to lobed and have a white, felted underside. The crown can be irregular and develop on several trunks. In spring, reddish male catkins or greenish female catkins appear on separate trees; female specimens then produce capsules with hairy seeds.
In full sun it reaches 20 to 30 m. It needs cool to moist soil and tolerates brief flooding. Its watering needs are very high, with frequent, deep waterings that do not prolong the lack of oxygen at the roots. It tolerates high humidity and USDA 3–9 frosts. A steady water supply during establishment supports its growth rate and the formation of its crown.
At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
