Populus boleana

Features and care

Populus boleana, now identified as Populus alba ‘Pyramidalis’ and known as the Bolle’s poplar, is a narrow-growing deciduous selection. Its vertical silhouette and the contrast of its foliage have been used in screens and avenue plantings where a strong rhythm of green columns is wanted.

Its ascending branches form a pyramidal or columnar crown. The lobed leaves are dark green on top and white and felted underneath; this contrast is especially visible when the air moves. Spring flowering, before or around leaf emergence, takes a back seat to the tree’s shape.

It grows very fast to about 15–25 m in a sunny position. It requires cool to moist, well-drained ground and high watering to keep moisture even, increasing the amount in hot weather without saturating. It adapts well to humid air and withstands frosts within USDA 3–9. Forming a balanced crown depends on the space available and on how it is managed as it grows.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
