Pyrus calleryana

Features and care

Pyrus calleryana, known as the Callery pear, is a fast-growing deciduous tree with a dense crown. Its white flowers and autumn colour explain its ornamental uses in urban spaces and gardens, presented here without generally recommending new plantings.

The oval leaves are glossy and dark green, with autumn changes that can combine yellow, orange, red and purple. The white flowers gather in clusters in spring. Later, small rounded fruits appear, in yellowish-green to brown tones, while the crown keeps a compact structure.

It accepts sun or part shade and reaches 8 to 15 m. It prefers dry to cool, well-drained soil, with low supplemental watering during establishment and dry spells. The soil can dry out partially between waterings. It tolerates high humidity and frosts in the USDA 5–9 range, but the exact shape of the crown also depends on the selection grown.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
