Schinus terebintifolius

Features and care

Schinus terebintifolius, now identified as Schinus terebinthifolia and known as the Brazilian pepper tree, is a large evergreen shrub or small tree. Its glossy foliage and red fruits explain its historical introduction as an ornamental, a role described here without generally endorsing new plantings.

It can form several trunks and a densely branched crown. The leaves are compound and aromatic when rubbed. The small white flowers appear grouped in panicles during the warm season and, on female plants, give way to clusters of red spherical fruits that stand out among the foliage.

It requires a sunny position and reaches 5 to 10 m with fast growth. It accepts dry to moist, well-drained soil, and moderate, deep, spaced-out waterings that do not keep it permanently saturated. Its tolerance to humid air is very high. It falls within USDA 9–11 and needs mild winters, as frost episodes can limit its outdoor cultivation.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
